Veteran Tree Management

Managing veteran trees can be challenging, but it is one of the most rewarding things that we do. Prolonging the life of ancient trees without compromising public safety presents many problems that can be overcome with the right management, preserving something which connects us with the past in a way that no man-made structure can.

A true Veteran tree is one which has lived beyond the normal life expectancy for its species.

There are many different techniques involved in managing ancient trees, many of which are aimed at making old and structurally compromised trees safer, such as bracing, propping and heavy reductions (veteranisation). In the right location veteran trees can be used to create new habitats for birds, bats and invertebrates with coronet and fracture pruning methods which mimic the wounds and tears found in a natural woodland environment.

For more information on any woodland or tree management issues please contact us, initial consultations are free of charge. Our teams are located in Edinburgh, Central & Southern Scotland and Northumberland.
